The Parental Bereavement (Pay and Leave) bill has been published which entitles parents who lose a child under the age of 18 to two weeks paid leave. Currently, Employers are under no legal obligation to allow parents paid time off to grieve, they are only expected to be understanding and flexible with requests.
In addition, the bill provides that those employees who have been in continuous service for 26 weeks or more will also be able to benefit from statutory parental bereavement pay (the cost of which employer’s will be able to recover from the Government).
