Eviction ban extended for Commercial property tenants until 31 March 2021

The Government have announced that they are extending a ban on evictions of commercial property tenants until the end of March 2021. This prevents landlords from pursuing tenants for unpaid rent by legal means or from evicting them.

This is the third time the Government will have extended this ban however,  they have confirmed that this will be the final extension to protections from the threat of eviction. It provides landlords and tenants three months to come to an agreement on unpaid rent. If a business can pay their rent (either all or partially) then they should so do. These protections are only in place for businesses who have been affected by the pandemic and cannot pay their rent.

They have also announced that there will be review of the commercial landlord and tenant legislation to address concerns that it does not currently reflect the economic conditions. However, no timeframe as been provided.
